Common use cases
- Blog posts and articles. Most SEO guides recommend 1,500–2,500 words for competitive keywords. Use the counter to hit your target before publishing.
- SEO meta descriptions. Keep your meta description under 160 characters to avoid Google truncating it in search results.
- Academic writing. Essays and dissertations often have strict word limits. Check your count without leaving your editor.
- Social media copy. Twitter/X allows 280 characters; LinkedIn posts perform best at 1,300–2,000 characters. Use the character count to stay in range.
- Reading time estimation. Knowing your article's reading time helps set reader expectations and improves engagement metrics.
Limitations
- Sentence detection is based on
. ! ?punctuation. Abbreviations like "Dr." or "e.g." may inflate the sentence count slightly. - Reading time assumes a 200 wpm reading rate. Complex technical content may take significantly longer.
- The top words list excludes common English stop words (the, a, is, etc.) but does not support other languages' stop word lists.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter work?
It splits your text on whitespace to count words, counts every character individually for character count, detects sentence boundaries by periods, exclamation marks and question marks, and groups consecutive non-empty lines into paragraphs.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on an average adult reading speed of 200 words per minute, which is a widely used benchmark for online content. Skimming can be 2–3× faster; technical content may be slower.
Is there a word limit?
No hard limit, but the tool is optimised for documents up to around 50,000 words. For very large texts, pasting in chunks will give you the same total.
Does the character count include spaces?
The tool shows both: characters with spaces and characters without spaces. Most platforms (Twitter/X, LinkedIn, SMS) count spaces as characters.
Can I use this for SEO meta descriptions?
Yes. A good meta description is 150–160 characters. Paste your draft and watch the character counter — stop before 160 to avoid truncation in search results.
