When to use a tip calculator

  • Group dinners. Splitting a restaurant bill evenly — including tip — avoids the awkward mental arithmetic at the table. Set the number of people and the per-person amount is instant.
  • Rideshares and taxis. Tip 10–20% of the fare. Useful when the app doesn't suggest a tip or you're paying cash.
  • Hotel stays. Calculate the right amount for housekeeping ($2–5 per night) or concierge services without guessing.
  • Food delivery. Delivery workers rely on tips. Use the 10–15% preset as a starting point and adjust for distance or service.
  • Travelling abroad. Tipping customs vary widely by country. The custom percentage field lets you enter any local norm.

Limitations

  • The calculator uses USD ($) as the currency symbol. The maths works for any currency — just ignore the symbol.
  • The "per person" split assumes equal shares. If people ordered differently and want to pay individually, you'll need to calculate each person's subtotal separately.
  • Tipping norms in the guide above are US-centric. Customs vary significantly by country — in Japan and much of Europe, tipping is not expected.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
The standard tip in the US is 15–20% for restaurants. 10% for basic service, 15% for good service, 20% for excellent service, and 25%+ for exceptional service.
How do I split a bill evenly?
Enter the bill total, choose a tip percentage, then set the number of people. The calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette suggests tipping on the pre-tax amount, but most people tip on the total. Either is fine — the difference is usually small.
How much do I tip for delivery?
For food delivery, 10–15% is standard, with a minimum of $3–5 regardless of order size.
